Mountains of the Dragon: An Australian sculptor's account of an

Mountains of the Dragon is a biographical novel set on a farm in the Drachenburg Mountains of south-eastern Africa. It is an innocent world that that has virtually disappeared, where children could roam freely, and a grandmother could say, “You cannot cage a child’s spirit just because you fear for her body.” This English girl’s spirit was set free among this amazing landscape, which she explored with her little Bushman companions.

The latter part of the novel, set in rather strict English schools, reaffirms how timeless and universal the experience of being a teenager can be: the peer pressure and the conflict between needing to conform and longing to be individual and out of the ordinary, and the growing awareness of the wider world, of cultural differences and opposing ideas.

Helen Leete lives in Sydney, teaching and making sculpture. She is best known for her “landscape sculptures”. See www.helenleete.com.au
